Accelerating Culture Change: A Simulation-Based Approach

Matt Mayberry, Whole Works
Bill Throop, Green Mountain College

Many organizations have attempted to meld the tools of competitive advantage with sustainability. Most have failed to achieve their ambitious goals. Some have stalled. Sustainability tools and strategies can help organizations align their efforts and communicate their intentions both internally and externally. But as Peter Drucker once quipped, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

Cultures don’t change by setting ambitious goals. They change by practicing – and reflecting on – new behaviors.

In this presentation we outline a multi-layered approach to catalyzing culture change that uses a full-immersion simulation as a leadership “practice field.” The virtual environment serves as a safe space where managers can experiment with collaborating together in courageous, creative, and practical ways. By combining computer simulation with behavioral elements, the experience brings together “hard” and “soft” skills on the practice field. Our team has previously used this approach with companies such as Nike, Dow Corning, and Starwood to build new leadership competencies across large organizations.

Based on nearly two decades of experience, we have created The Sustainability Leadership Experience (SLX) to accelerate the shift to sustainability and long-term competitive advantage. This program combines personal development and sustainability tools and strategies with repeated cycles of practice and reflection in a multi-stakeholder environment. In addition to strengthening business acumen and basic leadership skills, the program develops the competencies needed to thrive in today’s turbulent business environment: systems thinking, stakeholder collaboration, and decision-making under uncertainty.

During our presentation we will give a brief demonstration of our newest simulation and show how it enables participants to practice new approaches to business decision-making. We will conclude by sharing best practices for using leadership development as a vehicle to accelerate culture change.
